Five years old!!
The big five years old!
This was the most excited Thomas had been about a birthday yet, and he
has told everyone that he has seen since his birthday that he is FIVE now. He is definitely a 'big kid' and takes a lot
of pride in helping out with projects or chores. His love for reading gets stronger all the
time, and he loves to learn about things.
He still has a thousand questions about everything, and an incredible
memory.
He knows his alphabet and recognizes both lower case and
upper case letters. He can write most of
them from memory and all of them with an example. He writes his name and is learning to write
other small words. He is incredibly
proud when he spells simple words (like mom and dad).
Thomas is big on negotiation and is always bargaining for a
few more minutes at the park, a little longer until bedtime or four of
something instead of three. He loves his
iphone and is constantly trying to guess what our iTunes password is so that he
can download new apps. (He was extremely
disappointed that it wasn't Thomas).
He doesn't like to sleep - ever - so he makes up any excuse
to get out of bed and he loves sharing a room with his brother and staying up
way past bedtime laughing and playing.
He loved the movies Smurfs and Despicable Me and their
sequels and really got into collecting the Happy Meal toys. He loves superhero (he calls them
save-the-world-guys) shows and toys, but he especially loves dressing up in costumes
and pretending he is one. His favorite
color is green, so he wants everything (clothes, toys, dishes) in that
color.
He isn't a big breakfast eater, but starting around
lunchtime he snacks all day. He usually
picks pretty healthy stuff (lean meats, cheese, fruit, broccoli etc.) but is
constantly in and out of the kitchen getting something. If I tell him that he needs to wait to eat
something, he tells me that he at least needs a piece of cheese so that he has
enough protein. His new 'favorite' is
grilled cheese sandwiches, and he is pretty funny about his food being mixed
together. I can put lettuce, olives,
cheese, hamburger meat and a taco shell on his plate, and he'll eat every bite,
but if I give him a taco he won't touch it.
This summer he started swimming without a lifejacket (for
short periods of time) and can swim the length of the pool before stopping for
breath. He is totally fearless. We took him tubing at the lake, and after he
heard that thumbs up meant he wanted to go faster he held his thumb up the
entire time. He loves to climb to the
top of the tallest toys at the playground, and even went zip-lining at the fair
this year.
He is constantly on the go and thrives when we are
busy. He constantly wants to go
somewhere - a friend's house, bowling, movies, parks, jump zone, the library or
any play area. He is super active and constantly
in motion from the time he wakes up until we force him to go to bed. He does love coloring, painting, clay, puzzles
and playing board games, but he moves from one activity to the next extremely
fast.
He is so curious about everything, and we are constantly caught
up in his excitement. Every day with him
brings something new and amazing, and we love getting to see the world through
his eyes!
